Eligibility of 4YF Doctoral Fellowship At UBC Canada

Domestic and international students are eligible to apply for four-year fellowships. The fellowships are often awarded to students in their first year of full-time Ph.D., DMA, or MDPhD study, although they may also be awarded to continuing students. 4YF funding may be available for up to four years, although in rare cases, money may be available for less time (please refer to the 4YF Guidelines for details). Funding is contingent on acceptable academic advancement in all situations.

Vanier Scholarships, Doctoral Canada Graduate Scholarships (CGSD), CIHR Doctoral Research Prizes, NSERC Doctoral Postgraduate Scholarships (PGSD), and SSHRC Doctoral Fellowships are among the Tri-Agency awards that automatically designate students as 4YF designates. Doctoral students who earn Tri-Agency scholarships may be eligible for 4YF tuition coverage and will receive a 4YF stipend and tuition assistance until their external scholarship funding stops, or until the conclusion of their 5th year in the Doctoral program, whichever comes first.

Other major external scholarship winners who are designated as 4YF designates may be eligible for 4YF tuition coverage and will receive a 4YF stipend and tuition support once their external scholarship funding ends, which will be four years after the 4YF start date or until the end of their fifth year in the Doctoral program, whichever comes first.

How To Apply

Students must apply for admission to the relevant graduate program at UBC to be considered for a Four Year Fellowship. Visit the Application & Admission website for information on admission procedures and criteria. 4YF funding is automatically evaluated for all Ph.D., DMA, and MDPhD applicants who are accepted.

To keep their eligibility for 4YF support, 4YF recipients must apply for other grants.
(a) If eligible, 4YF holders who are Canadian citizens or permanent residents must apply for Tri-Agency assistance each year. They will lose their remaining 4YF money if they do not comply.
(b) International students who get a 4YF are not obligated to apply for the annual Affiliated Fellowship competition (held each autumn), although they are entitled to do so if they choose to vie for Affiliated Fellowships with greater stipends (such as the Killam Doctoral Fellowship).
