Ph.D. Positions in Polymer Chemistry at ETH Zurich are going to be offered for competent students. Two fully-funded Ph.D. places are available in the Polymeric Materials Laboratory of ETH Zurich’s Materials Department. The discovery of novel techniques for the production of smart polymers and polymeric nanomaterials is the focus of our research group. Controlled radical polymerization and other methods are often used to create polymeric materials with precise architecture, molecular weight, dispersion, and functionality. Following that, we want to know how polymeric materials self-assemble into nanostructures where all characteristics can be controlled. Understanding the foundations of polymerization processes is critical to our strategy, as it allows us easy access to the manufacture of well-defined polymeric (nano)materials. Job Responsibilities of Ph.D. Positions in Polymer Chemistry at ETH Zurich
The two doctoral posts’ research will focus on polymer synthesis and characterization using controlled radical polymerization and other methods. The main goal is to:
- enhance current methods for creating complicated (nano)materials (e.g., ATRP, RAFT, emulsion polymerization).
- Understand the underlying process of these polymerization systems at a fundamental level.
- Synthesize sequence- and dispersity-controlled polymers using the knowledge gained.
In addition, novel techniques for reversing controlled radical polymerization and producing monomers from functional polymers will be devised. The recycled monomers will be utilized to make better versions of the original polymers or to create novel polymers and polymeric nanomaterials.
The Ph.D. jobs are fully financed for four years (extendable) and come with a competitive remuneration based on ETH guidelines. The project will begin in late 2021 or early 2022. (upon mutual agreement). Until the jobs are filled, applications will be evaluated on a rolling basis.
Eligibility for Ph.D. Positions
We’re seeking excellent individuals with an M.Sc. or equivalent in Chemistry, Material Science, or a related field, as well as a solid background in Polymer Chemistry and Organic Chemistry. Experience in ATRP, RAFT, emulsion polymerization, organic synthesis, and polymer characterization is preferred but not required.
Above all, candidates should be extremely enthusiastic about science and research, as well as self-motivated, curious, creative, and enthusiastic about their work. They should also have a strong team spirit, good critical thinking, and other abilities, and proficient written and spoken English.
