The Institution of Edinburgh is a Scottish public research university with its headquarters in Edinburgh. The university was founded in 1582 and officially inaugurated in 1583, making it one of Scotland’s four ancient universities and the world’s sixth-oldest English-speaking university. In the city of Edinburgh, the university comprises five main campuses, which include many historical and architecturally significant buildings, such as those in Old Town. The institution was essential in Edinburgh’s development as a major intellectual centre during the Scottish Enlightenment, earning it the moniker “Athens of the North.”
