Visiting Artist Fellowship at Harvard University USA.
Through a competitive procedure, the Mittal Institute’s Arts Program awards fellowships to four mid-career artists from throughout South Asia and welcomes them to Harvard’s campus for two months. We give artists the opportunity to interact with Harvard faculty and students in the classroom, as well as a public presentation and exhibition to display their work. The program invites Harvard students to interact with artists from all backgrounds whose work addresses social, economic, and political concerns in South Asia via various genres.
Fellows have access to Harvard’s physical and digital libraries and archives, as well as the Harvard Museums and local museums, as well as the opportunity to attend classes and receive mentoring from faculty, as well as a platform to share their work through presentations, exhibits, and the Mittal Institute’s website.
The 2020-2021 Visiting Artist Fellowship has been redesigned due to COVID-related programmatic changes. Instead of selecting four artists to visit Harvard’s campus this year, we’ve chosen our top 13 applicants to participate in a series of four online virtual seminars curated specifically for them to support their long-term practise while also contributing to thought-provoking discussions among their peers and the faculty facilitating the class.
The selected artists will travel to Harvard this autumn from India, Bangladesh, Pakistan, and Nepal to take classes in art history, creative writing, urban planning, and other subjects, taking use of the university’s intellectual and creative resources.

Eligibility of Visiting Artist Fellowship
- South Asian artists that are now residing in the region (Afghanistan, Bangladesh, Bhutan, India, Myanmar, Nepal, Pakistan, Maldives, or Sri Lanka). The applicant’s regional and thematic representation will be scrutinized.
- Artists in their mid-career who have a body of work and are actively presenting new work in professional artistic venues such as galleries and museums. Although formal professional training from an authorized university is not required, professional artists are recommended.
- Demonstrated a high level of scholarship productivity. Artists whose suggestions are closely related to The Mittal Institute’s ongoing research will be given special attention.
- Able to give a strategy and justification for using Harvard’s resources, such as specific classes, archives, libraries, or museum collections
- Possess a valid passport and the ability to obtain the required visa.
- Candidates who have been shortlisted will be asked to participate in a video interview with the review committee.

Benefits
- Each artist will receive a stipend of $8,000 for the length of the program, which will cover all expenses incurred while at the Mittal Institute. These include, but are not limited to, lodging, food, health insurance, domestic travel, and other similar expenses.
- In addition, the cost of a round-trip economy flight from South Asia to Cambridge, Massachusetts.
- The first week of the artist’s fellowship includes a campus orientation that includes information and access to Harvard’s enormous physical and digital libraries and archives, as well as the Harvard Art Museums.
- As much as possible, access to local museums and artistic groups.
- At the Institute, there is a common office space.
- Individual faculty approval is required to attend classes on campus.
